Out This Week: 30 March 2017

A slew of new releases, but only one must-see film

Yet another March weekend with a slew of new releases, but only one must-see film. Keep reading to find out which one!

Get Out

Get Out

Directed by: Jordan Peele
With: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, and Catherine Keener
What is it about? A young black man visits his white girlfriend’s family estate where he learns that many of its residents, who are black, have gone missing, and he soon learns the horrible truth when a fellow black man on the estate warns him to “get out”. He soon learns this is easier said than done
Heads Up:  Jordan Peele’s directorial debut has been a smashing success both commercially and critically. It’s a must see for sure!

Chips

Chips

Directed by: Dax Shepard
With: Dax Shepard,  Michael Peña, Jessica McNamee, and Kristen Bell
What is it about? A rookie officer is teamed with a hardened pro at the California Highway Patrol, though the newbie soon learns his partner is really an undercover Fed investigating a heist that may have involved some crooked cops.
Heads Up: A remake of a show from the 70s that has been met with a critical and commercial shrug. Don’t bother, I say.

Smurfs: The Lost Village

Smurfs-The-Lost-Village

Directed by: Kelly Asbury
With: Joe Manganiello, Demi Lovato, Jack McBrayer, and Danny Pudi
What is it about? A mysterious map sets Smurfette and her friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting race through the Forbidden Forest leading to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history.
Heads Up: Let’s face it – the Smurfs series has been critic-proof as it has been panned by critics but successful with its target audience which is small children. So keep that in mind if your kids demanded that you take them to see it.

Killing Ground

Killing Ground

Directed by: Damien Power
With: Harriet Dyer, Ian Meadows, Aaron Glenade, and Aaron Pederson
What is it about? A couples camping trip turns into a frightening ordeal when they stumble across the scene of a horrific crime.
Heads Up: The wild and the outback have been a backdrop for many memorable Australian horror films. Don’t let the terrible poster and trailer fool you, most of the reviews online for this film are positive, so give it a try if you are into horror.

Naam Shabana

Naam Shabana

Directed by: Shivam Nair
With: Tapsee Pannu, Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher, and Akshay Kumar
What is it about? The backstory of intelligence agent Shabana, and chronicles how she becomes a spy.
Heads Up: This is the prequel for 2015’s Baby. I watched the trailer, and there has not been a more cliched preview of a spy film. So much so that it made me think this must be a spoof or something. Please avoid (unless it turns out to be actually a spoof).
