Out This Week: 30 January 2020

A loaded weekend of new releases, with so many must-see films.

This is one of the most exciting slate of new releases in recent memory, with so many must-see films that you might need to go many times to a multiplex near you throughout the weekend and the week too. I will tell you all about it, if you keep reading.

Little Women

Directed by: Greta Gerwig
With: Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, and Meryl Streep
What is it about: Four sisters come of age in America in the aftermath of the Civil War.
Heads Up: The 8th film adaptation for American novelist Louisa May Alcott‘s renowned novel Little Women, not to mention TV, stage, and even cartoon adaptations, and I am sure there will be more in the future. This is Greta Gerwig‘s follow-up to her fantastic film Lady Bird. Here we see her re-teaming with two of her stars from that film Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet, who this time are leading an all-star amazing cast. This one is considered one of the best of 2019, and is nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Supporting actress. It’s a must-see!

Jojo Rabbit

Directed by: Taika Waititi
With: Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Taika Waititi, Sam Rockwell, and Scarlett Johansson
What is it about: A young boy in Hitler’s army finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.
Heads Up: Nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress, this is crowd-pleasing comedy from one of the most exciting directors working today Taika Waititi (What We Do in The Shadows, The Hunt for Wilderpeople, Thor: Ragnarok). This is another one that you have to make time for.

Queen & Slim

Directed by: Melina Matsoukas
With: Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie Turner-Smith, Bokeem Woodbine, and Chloë Sevigny
What is it about: A couple’s first date takes an unexpected turn when a police officer pulls them over.
Heads Up: This drama from first time director Melina Matsoukas is not only a critical hit, but a commercial success. It’s like Thelma & Louise for this times. I would recommend squeezing in this one too.

Gretel & Hansel

Directed by: Oz Perkins
With: Sophia Lillis, Sammy Leakey, Jessica De Gouw, and Alice Krige
What is it about: A long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.
Heads Up: A new retelling of the famous fairytale that scared children for centuries. This look stylish and creepy, but it can be put on hold for a week or two till you’re done with all the prestigious award contenders that are coming out at the same time. Thats unless you are a total horror fanboy who can’t wait.
