Out This Week: 28 February 2019

A dismal set of new movies. Look back to last week's releases, or save up for the Captain Marvel next week.

Nothing major is coming out this weekend, so maybe it’s time you catch up with older releases, unless you fancy any of the titles that I am previewing below.

Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral

Directed by: Tyler Perry
With: Tyler Perry, Cassi Davis, Patrice Lovely, and Mike Tyson
What is it about? A joyous family reunion turns into a hilarious nightmare as MADEA and the crew travel to backwoods Georgia and unexpectedly plan a funeral, which threatens to reveal sordid family secrets.
Heads Up? Tyler Perry announced that this will be the last film in his Madea series. These films are usually critically panned yet beloved by its core fanbase. If you are one of those then knock yourself out, otherwise stay clear.

Escape Room

Directed by: Adam Robitel
With:  Taylor Russell, Tyler Labine, Deborah Ann Woll, and Logan Miller
What is it about? Six strangers find themselves in circumstances beyond their control, and must use their wits to survive.
Heads Up? This horror thriller reminds me of films like Saw 2 and Cube about a group of strangers held captive in a confined space and get eliminated one by one in creative ways. The reviews are mixed, but for a low-budget film, it is made more than enough to justify a sequel. So if you are into such a high-concept horror thriller, then by all means.

Take Point

Directed by: Byung-woo Kim
With: Jung-woo Ha, Sun-kyun Lee, and Jennifer Ehle
What is it about? On the day of the U.S. presidential election in 2024, Ahab (HA) and his team of elite mercenaries embark on a secret CIA mission to abduct North Korea’s Armed Forces Minister in an underground bunker below the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). However, they get caught in the crossfire which causes tensions to escalate to the brink of World War III.
Heads Up? This South Korean action thriller looks interesting in concept, but there is not much that is gripping about its trailer. Unless the word of mouth is strong about it, I would not bother.

Bad Parents

Directed by: Fred Wolf
With: Alec Baldwin, Salma Hayek, Joe Manganiello, and Bridget Moynahan
What is it about? A couple attempts to hide their ever increasing financial difficulties from their daughter and social circle through elaborate neighborhood schemes.
Heads Up? Aside from Hayek and Baldwin, there is nothing in this film the pique my interest frankly. I’d say catch it at home if you must.

Toys

Directed by: Gary Wang
With: Ji Guanlin, Shi Lei, Yuan Zeyu, and Hung Huang
What is it about? A group of tea pets-cute clay figurines that are good-luck charms for tea drinkers-embark on a magical animated adventure to find a fabled mystic.
Heads Up? Toys (AKA Toys & Pets, AKA Tea Pets) it is a Chinese 3D animation that was released in China back in 2017. The film looks like a cute film that the little ones would enjoy.
