Out This Week: 25 April 2019

Can half the universe be unsnapped? Find out the answer this weekend.

Finally we have reached the Endgame, the biggest superhero movie event of all time. When it comes to the other releases, the list is slim especially from Hollywood this weekend. So let’s see what else is coming out.

P.S. Thanks for friend of Filmphoria Rishi Ramesh for helping with parts of this article.

Avengers: Endgame

Directed by: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
With: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, and Josh Brolin
What is it about? After the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War, the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to undo Thanos’ actions and restore order to the universe.
Heads Up? The biggest movie event of the year and the conclusion to the Infinity Saga spanning the previous 21 films and over a decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) leads us to this moment. Endgame is the end of an era, and many of our heroes whom we have loved for years are bound to depart or hang their mantles. The reactions from critics are exceedingly positive, and our own Faizan Rashid is among them. In his spoiler-free ★★★★½ review he wrote: “a big, bold, brash, beautiful film and one of the worthiest candidates for the title of blockbuster that you’ll ever experience“. I’m gonna be there opening day and I expect to see it more than once.

P.S. Avengers: Endgame opens wide across the GCC on April 24.

Boar

Directed by: Chris Sun
With: John Jarratt, Simone Buchanan, Hugh Sheridan, Nathan Jones, and Bill Moseley
What is it about? In the harsh, yet beautiful Australian outback lives a beast, an animal of staggering size, with a ruthless, driving need for blood and destruction. It cares for none, defends its territory with brutal force, and kills with a raw, animalistic savagery unlike any have seen before.
Heads Up?  This Australian creature horror film belongs to the 90s with films like CongoThe Ghost and the DarknessLake Placid, and of course Anaconda. If you could not get tickets for Endgame this weekend, then this might be one of the few alternative coming out this weekend.

Athiran

Directed by: Vivek
With: Fahadh Faasil, Sai Pallavi, and Prakash Raj
What is it about? In an isolated hospital in the high ranges of Kerala, an autistic patient with special skills piques the interest of a psychiatrist, whose investigation into her past leads to startling revelations.
Heads Up? Fahadh Faasil has been on a roll lately and this one is much anticipated with him him teaming up with Sai Pallavi for the first time. Athiran is a psychological horror film again a first for Faasil and is helmed by debutant Vivek.

Oru Yamandan Prema Kadha

Directed by: Robert Budreau
With: Dulquer Salmaan, Samyuktha Menon, and Nikhila Vimal
What is it about? A romantic comedy starring Dulquer Salmaan
Heads Up? Dulquer Salmaan returns to Malayalam cinema after a two year gap. This appears to be an all out comedy entertainer and will suitably reward fans of Salman who have had to wait long since 2017’s Solo. B.C. Noufal makes his debut as Director.

Exterior/Night

Directed by: Ahmad Abdalla
With: Karim Kassem, Mona Hala, and Sherief El Desouky
What is it about? Moe, Tutu and Mustafa, meet during unexpected circumstances and have their lives cross together. They embark on an adventure that has not been taken into account and become witnesses to a hidden and unknown side of the city.
Heads Up? This drama looks more appealing than the commercial fare that comes out of the Egyptian film industry. This is the kind of film that shows up in international film festivals like TIFF. It also looks entertaining, so I am mildly intrigued.
