Out This Week: 24 November 2016

4 movies. Your only consideration: how to prioritize them!

This is a jam-packed weekend with 4 strong films in different genres. And we can recommend all of them! So, buckle up and join the ride.

Arrival

arrival

Directed by: Denis Villeneuve
With: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker
What is it about? A linguist is recruited by the military to assist in translating alien communications.
Heads Up: One of this year most anticipated and critically acclaimed films. Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario, Enemy) is one of the most acclaimed directors of his generation. He tackles a sci-fi subject this time, an Alien Invasion no less! But as with all his movies, there is a human/psychological interpretation on what would have been a stock-story. The reviews have been stellar, and the director is a favourite of ours. Hence, a must see for sure!

Allied

allied

Directed by: Robert Zemeckis
With: Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard, and Jared Harris
What is it about? In 1942, an intelligence officer in North Africa encounters a female French Resistance fighter on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. When they reunite in London, their relationship is tested by the pressures of war.
Heads Up: From acclaimed writer Steven Knight (Locke, Eastern Promises) and occasional-genius director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Cast Away) comes this period drama thriller which is vying for awards consideration. Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard make a very cinematic couple and the movie undoubtedly looks good. Whether it delivers or not, it surely is worth attending the cinema to find out for yourself.

Moana

moana

Directed by: Ron Clements, John Musker
With: Dwayne Johnson, Auli’i Cravalho, Jemaine Clement, and Alan Tudyk
What is it about? A young woman uses her navigational talents to set sail for a fabled island. Joining her on the adventure is her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui.
Heads Up: The latest Disney film and one of the most anticipated animations of the year. Disney Animations has been on a winning streak in recent years (Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, etc), and strong reviews for this one suggest this film is only going to further that. I say take your kids and have fun. Plus, who doesn’t want to watch Dwayne The Rock Johnson as a singing, tattooed, over-the-top demi-god?

Dear Zindagi

dear-zindagi

Directed by: Gauri Shinde
With: Alia Bhatt, Shah Rukh Khan, Kunal Kapoor, and Angad Bedi
What is it about? A budding cinematographer in search of a perfect life encounters an unconventional thinker that helps her gain a new perspective on life
Heads Up: Gauri Shinde made one of the most admirable character-driven movie of recent times in English Vinglish. Now she’s back with another movie that looks fresh, and hence appealing. To watch Shahrukh Khan in a movie that is not about his stardom is fascinating enough. The trailer also have him being very real, and not hamming to glory. Go for it!
