Out This Week: 23 November 2017

It is the week of Pixar, with their latest original release COCO!

One of the most anticipated films of the fall, Pixar‘s Coco, is coming out this weekend. That and a few adult oriented films, so keep reading.

Coco

Directed by: Lee Unkrich, Adrian Molina
With: Gael García Bernal, Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt, and Renée Victor
What is it about? Aspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family’s ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to work out the mystery.
Heads Up: Coco is the latest Pixar original film and is poised to be this year’s MVP when it comes to animation. It’s the one of the best reviewed films of the year, and the critical consensus is that “Coco‘s rich visual pleasures are matched by a thoughtful narrative that takes a family-friendly — and deeply affecting — approach to questions of culture, family, life, and death“. I am certainly so looking forward to see this one.

Breathe

Directed by: Andy Serkis
With: Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Hugh Bonneville
What is it about? The inspiring true love story of Robin and Diana Cavendish, an adventurous couple who refuse to give up in the face of a devastating disease.
Heads Up: This romantic drama based on true story is the directorial debut of British actor Andy Serkis (aka Gollum from The Lord of The Ring Trilogy, and Caesar from Planet of The Apes Trilogy). The reviews aren’t glowing but decent enough, and most of the praise goes to the two lead performances by Garfield and Foy. It will be interesting to see how it goes considering that Serkis is currently wrapping up production of the bigger and more ambitious film The Jungle Book that is coming out in 2018.

A Bad Moms Christmas

Directed by: Jon Lucas, Scott Moore
With: Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines, and Susan Sarandon
What is it about? As their own mothers drop in unexpectedly, our three under-appreciated and over-burdened moms rebel against the challenges and expectations of the Super Bowl for mothers: Christmas.
Heads Up: I personally love (or at least like) each one of these actresses in the poster, but they do deserve a better film. The first film, Bad Moms, was a hit and had some funny jokes, but it was not a very good film, and the reviews for this one are even worse. I would say cringe at it at from the comfort of your home when it comes out on DVD.

Killing Gunther

Directed by: Taran Killam
With: Taran Killam, Cobie Smulders, and Arnold Schwarzenegger
What is it about? A group of eccentric assassins are fed up with Gunther, the world’s greatest hitman, and decide to kill him, but their plan turns into a series of bungled encounters as Gunther seems to always be one step ahead.
Heads Up: Even though this action comedy is already available on VOD, it looks funny enough that I’m really looking forward to seeing it, and it looks like a film that can be enjoyed at the cinema with a group of friends.

Imperium

Directed by: Daniel Ragussis
With: Daniel Radcliffe, Toni Collette, and Tracy Letts
What is it about? A young FBI agent, eager to prove himself in the field, goes undercover as a white supremacist.
Heads Up: Imperium is a good thriller drama that has been available for rent on VOD platforms for  more than a year, so there is no reason why this should be watched now on the big screen.

Verna

Directed by: Shoaib Mansoor
With: Mahira Khan, Haroon Shahid, and Zarrar Khan
What is it about? A married couple’s life falls apart as they face extraordinary circumstances.
Heads Up: This Pakistani thriller drama is already marred in controversy after being banned by the censor then cleared after a public outcry. Reviews are mixed to negative, but the director’s acclaimed previous work coupled with the drama surrounding its release surely would pique some interest.
