Out This Week: 20 October 2016

Two big action films this weekend. One of them stars Tom Cruise.

This weekend in October has two big action films with big stars, but not that many smaller releases. Let’s see what you can expect on the big screens this weekend.

Jack Reacher : Never Go Back

jack-reacher-never-go-back

Directed by: Edward Zwick
With: Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Danika Yarosh, and Robert Knepper
What is it about? Jack Reacher must uncover the truth behind a major government conspiracy in order to clear his name. On the run as a fugitive from the law, Reacher uncovers a potential secret from his past that could change his life forever.
Heads Up: Tom Cruise is reprising his role as Jack Reacher, a retired US Army Major now a private investigator who is the protagonist on the best selling series of books by British author Lee Child. The first film was a moderate hit and a good movie. I’m not liking how the trailer of this film makes him look like a superhero, and the early reviews are backing my fears as they are not very kind. That said, it’s is a Tom Cruise film, and given that none of the other new releases is exciting, I would say go for it.

Keeping Up with the Joneses

Directed by: Greg Mottola
With: Zach Galifianakis, Jon Hamm, Isla Fisher, and Gal Gadot
What is it about? A suburban couple becomes embroiled in an international espionage plot when they discover that their seemingly perfect new neighbors are government spies.
Heads Up:  This is an action comedy from director Greg Mottola (Superbad, Paul). The cast is stellar, but the early reviews are brutal. I would say wait for the word of mouth before paying hard earned money to see it in cinema.

Submerged

submerged

Directed by: Steven C. Miller
With: Jonathan Bennett, Talulah Riley, Mario Van Peebles, and Tim Daly
What is it about? A young woman and her friends, who’ve been targeted by kidnappers, must do everything they can to survive after their limo is forced off the road and plunged into a canal.
Heads Up: A B-horror movie with an intriguing premise. I suspect it will be predictable and cliched, but I’m curious about it. I’d say watch it if you are bored and out of good options.

Sacrifice

sacrifice

Directed by: Peter A. Dowling
With: Radha Mitchell, Rupert Graves, and David Robb
What is it about? Deep in the peat soil around her new home, Tora discovers the body of a young woman with rune marks carved into her skin and a gaping hole where her heart once beat. Ignoring warnings to leave well alone, Tora uncovers terrifying links to a legend that might never have been confined to the pages of the story books.
Heads Up: It looks like a film that I wouldn’t mind watching on TV, but not necessarily a film that I would pay to watch on big screen. I’d say pass!
