Out This Week: 20 April 2017

A busy weekend of many releases, but not one movie to recommend

This weekend is very busy with many releases, but there isn’t one standout film to recommend. Anyway, let’s see what’s in store for us.

Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in The Shell

Directed by: Rupert Sanders
With: Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche and Michael Pitt
What is it about? In the near future, Major is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals.
Heads Up: This film has been marred in whitewashing controversy, because it took the source material (1995’s beloved Japanese anime) and gave it a White American star. The film flopped commercially and critically, but many agree that its visuals are amazing if hollow, which is not surprising because it’s directed by Rupert Sanders who makes beautiful visually interesting films (his previous film was Snow White and The Huntsman). so I am curious but not too eager to see it.

The Boss Baby

The Boss Baby

Directed by: Tom McGrath
With: Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi, and Jimmy Kimmel
What is it about? A suit-wearing briefcase-carrying baby pairs up with his seven-year-old brother to stop the dastardly plot of the CEO of Puppy Co.
Heads Up: The latest Dreamworks animation has been received with mixed reviews and a great commercial success. I think kids are gonna enjoy it and parents will have to tolerate it.

Mine

Mine

Directed by: Fabio Guaglione, Fabio Resinaro
With: Armie Hammer, Annabelle Wallis, and Tom Cullen
What is it about? After a failed assassination attempt, a soldier finds himself stranded in the desert. Exposed to the elements, he must survive the dangers of the desert and battle the psychological and physical toll of the treacherous conditions.
Heads Up: Although Armie Hammer is a charismatic good actor when given good material, I am not sure this film is worth the price of the ticket, because it is already out on VOD, and because the reviews are terrible.

The Void

The Void

Directed by: Jeremy Gillespie, Steven Kostanski
With: Aaron Poole, Kenneth Welsh, Daniel Fathers
What is it about? Shortly after delivering a patient to an understaffed hospital, a police officer experiences strange and violent occurrences seemingly linked to a group of mysterious hooded figures.
Heads Up: This Canadian low budget horror film is an homage to the 80’s horror films. The reviews are very good, so if you are a fan of the genre, I advise you to watch it with a good midnight crowd.

Unforgettable

Unforgettable

Directed by: Denise Di Novi
With: Rosario Dawson, Katherine Heigl, and Geoff Stults
What is it about? A woman sets out to make life hell for her ex-husband’s new wife.
Heads Up: This female-centric thriller has one thing that is going for it, and that’s Rosario Dawson. Other than that, it looks like a TV movie to be honest. The ladies may appreciate this one more than guys.

Noor

Noor

Directed by: Sunhil Sippy
With: Sonakshi Sinha, Sunny Leone, and Purab Kohli
What is it about? Noor is a journalist who juggles her work, love and personal life on a day-to-day basis. One day, Noor’s life takes a dramatic turn when she comes across an eye-opening investigative news story.
Heads Up: From the trailer, this film has a major tone issue. It starts as a wannabe Bridget Jones’s Diary then it becomes more serious and dramatic. I like Sonakshi Sinha but I am not sure I am on board with this one.
