Out This Week: 10 September 2015

An action comedy, a romantic comedy, a Sci-Fi comedy, thriller, a drama with Nicholas Cage and a Bollywood remake of an 80's film.

At this time of year, it really is a dumping ground when it come to releases. There are too many releases, and none would really stick with viewers. We will highlight this week a few of this slew of releases. We have an action comedy, a romantic comedy, a Sci-Fi comedy, thriller, a drama with Nicholas Cage and a Bollywood remake of an 80’s film.

American Ultra

Directed by: Nima Nourizadeh
With: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Connie Britton, and Topher Grace

Heads up: A stoner who spends most of his time getting high with his girlfriend and writing a graphic novel, discovered he actually is secretly trained by the CIA to be a lethal killing machine. From its trailer, this seems to be a fun action comedy, so despite its mixed reviews, this is my pick for the week.

Sleeping with Other People:

Directed by: Leslye Headland
With: Jason Sudeikis, Alison Brie, Adam Scott, and Amanda Peet

Heads up: The story of two sex addicts who can’t form a long lasting relationships because they always want to sleep with other people. When they meet, they decide to form a platonic relationship that helps reform them in ways, while a mutual attraction sets in. The two leads are very likable, and the story borrows from classics like When Harry Met Sally. There is a lack of good romantic comedy as of late.

Absolutely Anything:

Directed by: Terry Jones
With: Simon Pegg, Kate Beckinsale, and Robin Williams

Heads up: A group of eccentric aliens confer a human being with the power to do absolutely anything while they watch and be entertained. This is from the Monty Python team, but even with its pedigree, this film is almost universally panned by critics. Despite all that, I think this film will make you laugh judging by its trailer. It also features voice work by the late Robin Williams, one of his last.

The Perfect Guy:

Directed by: Tyger Williams
With: Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, and Morris Chestnut

Heads up: Girl breaks up with a handsome guy. Girl hooks up with an even better looking guy. Girl finds out the new guy is too good to be true. That is the film in nutshell. It has elements from Fatal Attraction, but it looks so predictable and generic. I’d say pass!

The Runner:

The Runner Poster
Directed by: Austin Stark
With: Nicolas Cage, Connie Nielsen, Sarah Paulson, and Peter Fonda

Heads up: In the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill, an idealistic but flawed politician is forced to confront his dysfunctional life after his career is destroyed in a sex scandal. This doesn’t look like a great political drama, it is just one of the many forgettable films that Nicholas Cage makes these days. Avoid!

 Hero:

Hero Poster
Directed by: Nikhil Advani
With: Sooraj Pancholi, Athiya Shetty, Govinda, and Vinod Khanna

Heads up: After meeting the chief of police’s pretty daughter, a gangster kidnaps the girl. During the journey they fall in love and the gangster decides to set her free. This is a remake of the 80’s Jackie Shroff superhit. It looks like a Salman Khan movie with a 25 years old lead, and that is not surprising because it is infact produced by Salman Khan. So if you are fan of such films, this is for you.
