Out This Week: 09 February 2017

This weekend, your choice basically comes down to this: Keanu Reeves or Batman?

Another busy weekend at the cinema with so many different high profile films. So let’s just dive into it, shall we?

 John Wick: Chapter 2

John Wick Chapter 2

Directed by: Chad Stahelski
With: Keanu Reeves, Common, Laurence Fishburne, and Ian McShane
What is it about? After returning to the criminal underworld to repay a debt, John Wick discovers that a large bounty has been put on his life.
Heads Up: Out of nowhere in 2014 came John Wick and took us all by storm. Now our favorite brooding hitman is back and just a look at the poster above says it all for me, so I’m all in! (Remember to leave the kids at home!)

The LEGO Batman Movie

The Lego Batman Movie

Directed by: Chris McKay
With: Will Arnett, Ralph Fiennes, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, and Rosario Dawson
What is it about? Bruce Wayne must not only deal with the criminals of Gotham City, but also the responsibility of raising a boy he adopted.
Heads Up: A spin-off to The Lego Movie which was a surprise commercial and critical hit back in 2014. That film introduced the best Batman interpretation in years, and this movie builds on that. The trailer is really fun, so l am looking forward to see this one, and I think you should be too. (Remember to take the kids too!)

Rings 3

Rings

Directed by: F. Javier Gutiérrez
With: Vincent D’Onofrio, Laura Wiggins, Aimee Teegarden
What is it about? A young woman finds herself on the receiving end of a terrifying curse that threatens to take her life in 7 days.
Heads Up: Going back to the well (pun intended) for a third time probably will not work out great. There is nothing about this sequel that excites me especially considering that I am a huge fan of the first Ring (a remake in itself of a Japanese the Japanese film Ringu), and the reviews are dismal even for a horror film. I’d say avoid.

The Space Between Us

The Space Between Us

Directed by: Peter Chelsom
With:  Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson, Carla Gugino and Gary Oldman
What is it about? The first human born on Mars travels to Earth for the first time, experiencing the wonders of the planet through fresh eyes. He embarks on an adventure with a street smart girl to discover how he came to be.
Heads Up: A Sci-Fi teen romance lead by two of the brightest young actors of recent years. Reviews are bad, but I think it will appeal to the young audience nonetheless.

Jolly LL.B 2

Jolly LLB 2

Directed by: Subhash Kapoor
With: Akshay Kumar, Annu Kapoor, and Huma Qureshi
What is it about? Jolly takes up a huge case where he will fight against the corrupt and the powerful. The fight for what is right will not be an easy one for Jolly as he will realise he will be the last man standing up for justice against injustice.
Heads Up: Jolly LLB was a moderate hit back in 2013 and won a few National Awards. Capitalizing on that the studio felt the need to change lead for the sequel from the underrated Arshad Warsi to the A-lister Akshay Kumar. While Akshay Kumar is a great comedian in his own right, this cynical move is a reminder for how commerce trumps artistic merits in the entertainment industry. I for one am not bothering with this movie.
