Out This Week: 06 February 2020

All eyes are on one Ms. Harley Quinn this weekend.

After the avalanche of big releases last month, things are starting to cool down, and we only have one big release this weekend. Keep reading to know more.

Birds of Prey

Directed by: Cathy Yan
With: Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, and Ewan McGregor
What is it about: After splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.
Heads Up: On the heel of the smashing success of Joker (more than a billion dollars in its worldwide box-office and 11 Oscar nominations) comes the latest of DC’s stand alone film, a formula that is working way better for them than the connected DCEU ever did. This one is taking what was the only standout thing about the atrocious Suicide Squad; Harley Quinn played by the marvelous Margot Robbie, and giving her a chance to shine bright in what would hopefully be a better movie. I’d say give this one a chance.

The Room

Directed by: Christian Volckman
With: Olga Kurylenko, Kevin Janssens, and Joshua Wilson
What is it about: Matt and Kate buy an isolated house. While moving, they discover a strange room that grants them an unlimited number of material wishes. But, since Kate has had two miscarriages, what they miss the most is a child.
Heads Up: This psychological thriller has a promising Twilight Zone-esque premise, but I suspect that it will falter with execution. Still, I’m mildly intrigued. Despite that atrocious poster.

Malang

Directed by: Mohit Suri
With: Aditya Roy Kapoor, Disha Patani,  Kunal Khemu, Anil Kapoor
What is it about: Advait visits Goa where he meets Sara, a free-spirited girl who lives life unshackled. Opposites attract and all goes well until life turns upside down. Years later, Advait is on a killing spree with cops Aghase and Michael in his way.
Heads Up: Director Mohit Suri reunites with his Aashiqui 2 lead actor Aditya Roy Kapoor, only this time he is making what looks like one of his bad sexy thrillers from the early 2000s with a catchy theme song. I’d say avoid!

Varane Avashyamund

Directed by: Anoop Sathyan
With: Dulquer Salmaan, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Shobana, Suresh Gopi, and Urvashi
What is it about: The lives of a single mother and her daughter changes when a two men moves in with them in the same apartment.
Heads Up: starring Dulquer Salman and Kalyani Priyadarsan (in her debut in Malayalam), this is a film that’s expected to be a breezy, family entertainer that is the hallmark of veteran director Sathyan Anthikad who’s son Anoop Sathyan makes his debut with this film. Veteran stars Suresh Gopi, Shobhana and Urvashi complete the star cast. Going by the promos, it appears that the younger Sathyan is keen on following in his father’s footsteps and playing it safe with a tried and tested formula.
