Out This Week: 04 October 2018

6 releases, 3 to watch, 3 to avoid.

First weekend of October is witnessing the return of comic book movies to the big screen with Venom, but that is not all. Keep reading.

Venom

Directed by: Ruben Fleischer
With: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Riz Ahmed
What is it about? When Eddie Brock acquires the powers of a symbiote, he will have to release his alter-ego “Venom” to save his life.
Heads Up: Venom has been savaged by critics for being messy and chaotic in all the wrong ways. Our team at Filmphoria caught up with it on its premiere and some of their words of choice to describe it were “stinking” and “turd“. So avoid it unless you enjoy watching a train-wreck.

First Reformed

Directed by: Paul Schrader
With: Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, and Cedric the Entertainer
What is it about? A priest of a small congregation in upstate New York grapples with mounting despair brought on by tragedy, worldly concerns and a tormented past.
Heads Up? Paul Schrader the acclaimed writer of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull wrote and directed this film which is one the best reviewed films of 2018, and it is the film to watch this weekend, especially if you are a cinephile.

Little Italy

Directed by: Donald Petrie
With: Hayden Christensen, Emma Roberts, Alyssa Milano, and Andrea Martin
What is it about?  A young couple must navigate a blossoming romance, amidst a war between their families’ competing pizza restaurants.
Heads Up? From the director of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Miss Congeniality, and Mystic Pizza comes this film which recycles the story of Romeo and Juliet. The trailer is awful, and the reviews are brutal. I say you’d be better off skipping Little Italy and watching any of the other rom-coms instead.

Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms

Directed by: Mari Okada
With: Xanthe Huynh, Eddy Lee, and Cherami Leigh
What is it about?  An immortal girl and a normal boy meet and become friends, sharing a bond that lasts throughout the years.
Heads Up? This Japanese animation comes with the highest critical acclaim. If you are a fan of anime, then you don’t wanna miss this one.

Love Yatri

Directed by: Abhiraj Minawala
With:  Aayush Sharma, Warina Hussain, and Kamil Lemieszewski
What is it about? Romance blossoms between young Sushrut and Michelle when they meet during the festival of Navratri. When Michelle returns home to the United Kingdom, Sushrut embarks on an adventurous journey through a strange land to win back the woman he loves.
Heads Up? A rom-com with a first time star, starlet, and director. The story presented in the trailer and synopsis is recycled rom-com material, so unless you are desperate for a date film, I would say skip.

Andhadhun

Directed by: Sriram Raghavan
With:  Tabu, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Radhika Apte
What is it about? He sees what he shouldn’t. She sees what he couldn’t. So the question is, does he see it or not?
Heads Up? A mystery thriller from the director of Ek Hasina Thi, Johnny Gaddaar and Badlapur, with Tabu as a femme fatale? Oh yes, absolutely!
