It’s official, the summer movie season kicks off this weekend with one of the most anticipated sequels of the year. Also, some smaller releases that can’t possibly compete. Keep reading if you wanna know more.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Directed by: James Gunn
With: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Sylvester Stallone, and Kurt Russell
What is it about? Set to the backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.
Heads Up: Guardians of The Galaxy took many by surprise back in 2014 and was the biggest hit of that summer. Not only it made money, it also was critically embraced. While I am not expecting it to be as surprising and thrilling as the first film, I am eager to hang out some more with Star-Lord and crew, especially Baby Groot.
A United Kingdom
Directed by: Amma Asante
With: David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, and Tom Felton
What is it about? Prince Seretse Khama of Botswana causes an international stir when he marries a white woman from London in the late 1940s.
Heads Up: This film that is based on a true story has two excellent leads and has garnered great reviews that sum it up as “well-acted, solidly crafted, and all-around worthy”. So if you are looking for your romance fix, here is your chance.
Revenger
Directed by: Walter Hill
With: Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver, and Tony Shalhoub
What is it about? After waking up and discovering that he has undergone gender reassignment surgery, an assassin seeks to find the doctor responsible.
Heads Up: Michelle Rodriguez has the look, the talent, and the attitude to be a kickass action star, but this one looks like a film you might enjoy watching at the comfort of your home. I’d say pass.
Vincent N Roxxy
Directed by: Gary Michael Schultz
With: Emile Hirsch, Zoë Kravitz, Zoey Deutch, and Emory Cohen
What is it about? A small town loner and a rebellious punk rocker unexpectedly fall in love as they are forced on the run and soon discover violence follows them everywhere.
Heads Up: If I am to judge the film by its trailer, I would say “meh”, and certainly Emile Hirsch has stopped being relevant for a long time. But Zoë Kravitz is always interesting on screen, and if I am to watch this it would be because of her, and her alone.
Hotel Salvation
Directed by: Shubhashish Bhutiani
With: Adil Hussain, Lalit Behl, Geetanjali Kulkarni
What is it about? Faced with his father’s untimely and bizarre demand to go and die in the holy city of Varanasi and attain Salvation, a son is left with no choice but to embark on this journey.
Heads Up: A part of DIFF365 program on Vox Cinemas – Mall of Emirates, this Indian film, which first played in DIFF2016 will be screened for two weeks. If you are a fan of arthouse films, then this film is for you.
