This is one of the most explosive weekends of the summer, with the release of Christopher Nolan’s latest film. But that’s not just it, so keep reading.
Dunkirk
Directed by: Christopher Nolan
With: Fionn Whitehead, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, and Tom Hardy
What is it about? Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada, and France are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.
Heads Up: Christopher Nolan‘s latest has been called “a masterpiece” and “2017’s first sure-fire Oscar frontrunner”. Try to catch it at the IMAX screen, since more than 70% of the movie was shot with IMAX cameras. It deserves the big spectacle treatment.
Atomic Blonde
Directed by: David Leitch
With: Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, and Sofia Boutella
What is it about? An undercover MI6 agent is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents.
Heads Up: I was underwhelmed by Charlize Theron‘s bland role in The Fate of the Furious, but then just by watching the trailer of this film I was psyched again. This high-explosive action thriller is gonna kick ass and take names, plus it has my my man James McAvoy so I am totally in the bag for this film.
Boyka: Undisputed
Directed by: Todor Chapkanov
With: Scott Adkins, Teodora Duhovnikova, and Alon Aboutboul
What is it about? In the fourth installment of the fighting franchise, Boyka is shooting for the big leagues when an accidental death in the ring makes him question everything he stands for.
Heads Up: This is the latest installation of the Martial Art series Undisputed. I have nothing really to say about it, as this is a film with a specific target audience who will seek it out.
Brigsby Bear
Directed by: Dave McCary
With: Kyle Mooney, Mark Hamill, Claire Danes, and Greg Kinnear
What is it about? After being freed from the kidnappers he thought were his parents, a man sets out to make a movie of the only TV show he has ever known.
Heads Up: DIFF365 presents this well-received comedy-drama that premiered in Sundance Festival and received generally great reviews, praising its charm, quirkiness, and earnestness. If you seek a quieter and uplifting family film away from all the summer noise, then look no further.
Mubarakan
Directed by: Anees Bazmee
With: Anil Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, and Ileana D’Cruz
What is it about? Identical twin brothers turn to their eccentric uncle for help to make sure that they each marry the woman they love.
Heads Up: Director Anees Bazmee is known for his broad romp low-brow comedies like No-Entry, Welcome, and Singh is Kinng. They make little sense, but they are a good time with a big crowd, so if you are a fan of the aforementioned films, then this one is for you.
