It’s Diwali weekend, so Bollywood has a couple of high profile releases. There are also a few big English language films coming out, so let’s check them out.
mother!
Directed by: Darren Aronofsky
With: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer
What is it about? A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.
Heads Up: One of the most talked about films of the year. This is a very divisive film to say the least, so if you are going in expecting a conventional horror film, then this is not a film for you, but if you are familiar with director Darren Aronofsky‘s sensibility (Black Swan, The Fountain, The Wrestler), then this one should be a must-see for you.
Note: it is highly likely that the movie will be heavily censored for its theatrical release in the Middle East.
Geostorm
Directed by: Dean Devlin
With: Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, and Andy Garcia
What is it about? When the network of satellites designed to control the global climate start to attack Earth, it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything and everyone.
Heads Up: Take the cheesiest disaster movie you have ever seen and amp it to 11, and you will get what Geostorm is about, and that is just what I got from the trailer. It’s definitely a film that you should “enjoy” with a good crowd but don’t expect it to be any good, even in the slightest.
Secret Superstar
Directed by: Advait Chandan
With: Zaira Wasim, Meher Vij, Raj Arjun, and Aamir Khan
What is it about? Insu, a young Muslim girl, aspires to become a singer but faces restrictions from her conservative father. She happens to cross paths with a musician, which unfolds into an exciting journey.
Heads Up: This coming of age film is produced by Aamir Khan who’s playing a small role in the film as well. Zaira Wasim, who played the younger version of Aamir‘s daughter in Dangal, plays the lead here, and she certainly seems like an actress worth the trip to the cinema for. Aamir Khan rarely backs a project, and when ever he has produced, he’s made it worth our while. In any case, this is the more sensible choice of the two Hindi movies out this Diwali.
Golmaal Again
Directed by: Rohit Shetty
With: Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Tushar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Parineeti Chopra, Kunal Khemu, and Tabu
What is it about? Join the gang as they deal with a unique enemy hidden within their own home.
Heads Up: The fourth entry in the Golmaal franchise has “Logic Nahin” as a tagline in the trailer. So if you are onboard with that, then you will have fun.
Human Flow
Directed by: Ai Weiwei
With: Israa Abboud, Hiba Abed, and Rami Abu Sondos
What is it about? Human Flow is director and artist, Ai Weiwei‘s detailed and heartbreaking exploration into the global refugee crisis.
Heads Up: With the releases of this well received documentary, you can get your fix of serious films ahead of DIFF2017. Check it out if you are into documentary and if the subject matter is of your interest.
