Quite a few horror films are being released this weekend, but are any of them worth your time? That is the question I try to answer below, so keep reading:
Chappaquiddick
Directed by: John Curran
With: Jason Clarke, Kate Mara, Ed Helms, and Bruce Dern
What is it about? Depicting Ted Kennedy’s involvement in the fatal 1969 car accident that claims the life of a young campaign strategist, Mary Jo Kopechne.
Heads Up: Based on true events, this story of powerful people and how they can get away with “murder”; it was true 50 years ago, and it still is relevant. The film has gotten rave reviews, so I think you should go and see it.
Unsane
Directed by: Steven Soderbergh
With: Claire Foy, Joshua Leonard, and Jay Pharoah
What is it about? A young woman is involuntarily committed to a mental institution, where she is confronted by her greatest fear–but is it real or a product of her delusion?
Heads Up: This horror thriller from Steven Soderbergh was shot with an iPhone. Mr. Soderbergh is as a diverse a director as it gets — he made mainstream blockbusters (Ocean’s 11/12/13), award-winning films (Traffic, Che, Erin Brockovich), mid-budget movies (Side Effects, Logan Lucky, Magic Mike), and even small experimental films (Haywire, The Girlfriend Experience). Unsane belongs to the last category. Reviews are really good, and even though it bombed at the US box-office, this one gets my vote out all of the horror offerings this weekend.
Truth or Dare
Directed by: Jeff Wadlow
With: Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, and Violett Beane
What is it about? A harmless game of Truth or Dare among friends turns deadly when someone — or something — begins to punish those who tell a lie or refuse the dare.
Heads Up: Even though the film made a decent amount of money when it opened last weekend in US cinemas, it was savaged by the critics who described it as “not much more frightening than an average round of the real-life game“.
The Titan
Directed by: Lennart Ruff
With: Sam Worthington, Taylor Schilling, and Tom Wilkinson
What is it about? A military family takes part in a ground-breaking experiment of genetic evolution and space exploration.
Heads Up: The premise is intriguing for this horror Sci-Fi film, but the reviews are devastatingly terrible calling it “hokey“, “anticlimactic“, and “lacks depth and spectacle“. Suffice to say: stay away.
