Out This Week: 17 December 2015

A new Star Wars movie that will define a generation. And some other releases.

This is arguably the biggest & most anticipated weekend of 2015. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is finally out, plus Bollywood has two of its biggest stars reuniting after 5 years, and a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. That and more in this week’s article, so keep reading.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Star Wars The Force Awakens Poster

Directed by: J.J. Abrams
With:  Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, and Oscar Issac
Heads up: A continuation of the saga created by George Lucas and set thirty years after Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. The less you know about it, the better. Our own Faizan Rashid gave the film a 5-star rating. in his review he wrote: “There is no other way to say it. Believe the hype. Relive the fantasy. The Force Awakens brings back all the magic“. This is the biggest cinematic event of 2015, so DON’T MISS IT!!!

London Road

London Road Poster

Directed by:  Rufus Norris
With: Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman, Kate Fleetwood, and Anita Dobson
Heads up: This movie documents the events of 2006, when the quiet rural town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. When a local resident was charged and then convicted of the murders, the community grappled with what it meant to be at the epicentre of this tragedy. This is a counter-programming for the ones of you who don’t wanna see Star Wars, or for the ones who couldn’t score tickets. Either way, this film has a decent cast and reviews, so if you belong to either group, go for it.

When Marnie Was There

When Marnie Was There Poster

Directed byHiromasa Yonebayashi
With: Hailee Steinfeld, Kiernan Shipka, Geena Davis, and Kathy Bates
Heads up: From the iconic Japanese Studio Ghibli comes this story of  an emotionally distant adolescent girl, who upon being sent to live with relatives in the countryside, becomes obsessed with an abandoned mansion and infatuated with a girl who lives there; a girl who may or may not be real. Watch it if you like me grew up on Japanese animation playing on your TV, or grew into it at adulthood.

Dilwale

Dilwale Poster

Directed by: Rohit Shetty
With: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Kriti Sanon, and Varun Dhawan
Heads up: A couple in love try to overcome the violent conflict between their respective families. Let’s face it, if you are interested in this film is because you love Shah Rukh, Kajol, or both, and the generic plot summary is just a background noise. Chances are, this will be this year’s biggest Bollywood event (considering all of director Rohit Shetty’s films have been blockbusters), and most of its target audience will eat it like its a hot cake.

Bajirao Mastani

Bajirao Mastani Poster

Directed by: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
With: Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Priyanka Chopra
Heads up: The tale of romance between an Indian General, Peshwa Baji Rao I & his second wife, Mastani. The other big Bollywood releases this weekend from acclaimed director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It will be a lavish production, visually interesting, and star studded. I am certainly interested.
