This weekend Pixar is back in the game with Cars 3. If you are looking for a more mature film, then keep reading to find out if there is one in store for you.
Cars 3
Directed by: Brian Fee
With: Owen Wilson, Kerry Washington,Nathan Fillion, Chris Cooper, and Armie Hammer
What is it about? Lightning McQueen sets out to prove to a new generation of racers that he’s still the best race car in the world.
Heads Up: The Cars franchise from Pixar is decidedly not for me, as their fan base tends to be more children than adults. That said, the trailer and stills promises an amazing looking family romp, and it’s reviews are more favorable than its predecessor. I’d say take your young ones to watch it, but be ready to buy a whole lot of toys and merchs after that!
Maudie
Directed by: Aisling Walsh
With: Ethan Hawke, Sally Hawkins, and Kari Matchett
What is it about? An arthritic Nova Scotia woman works as a housekeeper while she hones her skills as an artist and eventually becomes a beloved figure in the community.
Heads Up: As a part of DIFF365, this based on a true story drama is playing at Vox Cinemas – Mall of Emirates. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive, calling the two lead performances by Hawkins and Hawke Oscar-worthy. So I would say seek it out for sure.
Voices from The Stone
Directed by: Eric D. Howell
With: Emilia Clarke, Marton Csokas, and Caterina Murino
What is it about? Set in 1950s Tuscany, Voice from the Stone is the haunting and suspenseful story of Verena, a solemn nurse drawn to aid a young boy who has fallen silent since the sudden passing of his mother.
Heads Up: A mystery drama based on a novel. The critical consensus is that aesthetically it nailed the gothic look, but it fails to deliver a compelling narrative. I’d say wait for the VOD release if you are inclined to watch it.
Bodom
Directed by: Taneli Mustonen
With: Tommi Korpela, Mimosa Willamo, and Nelly Hirst-Gee
What is it about? Every camper’s worst nightmare came true at Lake Bodom in 1960 when four teenagers were stabbed to death while sleeping in their tent.
Heads Up: This is a Finnish teenage slasher horror film. The trailer makes it looks like a typical of its genre, and I am only interested because the film is set at gorgeous location and because the poster looks so cool.
Outlaws and Angels
Directed by: JT Mollner
With: Chad Michael Murray, Francesca Eastwood, Luke Wilson, and Teri Polo
What is it about? When outlaws invade the home of an unsuspecting, seemingly innocent, frontier family to hide out for the night, an unexpected game of cat and mouse ensues, leading to seduction, role reversal, and ultimately, bloody revenge.
Heads Up: A bloody revenge Western that is described as “an ugly example of Tarantino-esque style”. I’d say avoid!
