One of the biggest most anticipated films of the spring season is opening this weekend, plus a few smaller films. So let’s check them out.
Fast & Furious 8
Directed by: F. Gary Gray
With: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood, and Charlize Theron
What is it about? When a mysterious woman seduces Dom into the world of crime and a betrayal of those closest to him, the crew face trials that will test them as never before.
Heads Up: Ever Since Fast 5, the Fast & Furious franchise has had a resurgence in popularity and has become one of the biggest global franchises (Refresh your memory with our reviews of Fast & Furious 6, and Furious 7). Although the series tragically lost its co-star the late Paul Walker, the list of stars headlining this film is too long to be contained in the poster. The trailer intrigued us with a great twist when it comes to Dom’s “betrayal” of his family and the introduction of Charlize Theron into this world, so of course I’m in.
Their Finest
Directed by: Lone Scherfig
With: Gemma Aterton, Sam Claflin, Richard E. Grant, Jack Huston, and Bill Nighy
What is it about? a married woman and a screenwriter develop a growing attraction while working together on a propaganda film about the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk, France.
Heads Up: From the director of the Oscar-nominated film An Education, this romantic comedy set against WWII is getting good reviews and has a delightful British cast. I would watch it at least to enjoy Bill Nighy lighting up the screen.
Eloise
Directed by: Jason Flemyng
With: Chace Crawford, Eliza Dushku, Brandon T. Jackson, and Robert Patrick
What is it about? Four friends break into an abandoned insane asylum in search of a death certificate which will grant one of them a large inheritance. However, finding it soon becomes the least of their worries in a place haunted by dark memories.
Heads Up: A very generic looking asylum horror film. Nothing to recommend here, so avoid.
Begam Jaan
Directed by: Srijit Mukherji
With: Vidya Balan, Pallavi Sharda, Gauhar Khan, and Naseeruddin Shah
What is it about? The story of eleven women who refuse to part ways with their brothel and each other during the partition between India and Pakistan.
Heads Up: Begum Jaan is the Hindi language debut of a National award winning Bengali director, starring Vidya Balan in another author-backed lead role. The trailer is intriguing and though it promises high drama, the prospect of watching another powerhouse performance from a wonderful actress sets this movie up as an easy bet to watch this week.
