Out This Week: 12 October 2017

Many new releases, but only a few deserve your attention.

Another October weekend packed with so many new releases in different genres, but only a few deserve your attention, so let’s navigate what’s worth your attention and what’s not.

The Snowman

Directed by: Tomas Alfredson
With: Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Chloë Sevigny, Val Kilmer, and J.K. Simmons
What is it about? Detective Harry Hole investigates the disappearance of a woman whose pink scarf is found wrapped around an ominous-looking snowman.
Heads Up: Acclaimed Swedish director Tomas Alfredson (Let The Right One In, Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy) is helming this mystery thriller based on bestselling novel with an amazing cast. Sign me in!!

Loving Vincent

Directed by: Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman
With: Douglas Booth, Jerome Flynn, Robert Gulaczyk, Chris O’Dowd, and Saoirse Ronan
What is it about? The world’s first fully oil painted feature film, brings the artwork of Vincent van Gogh to life in an exploration of the complicated life and controversial death of one of history’s most celebrated artists.
Heads Up: This animation film is geared toward mature audience and looks absolutely stunning. I would say check it out.

6 Below: Miracle on the Mountain

Directed by: Scott Waugh
With: Josh Hartnett, Mira Sorvino, and Sarah Dumont
What is it about? An adrenaline seeking snowboarder gets lost in a massive winter storm in the back country of the High Sierras where he is pushed to the limits of human endurance and forced to battle his own personal demons as he fights for survival.
Heads Up: Based on true story, and taking cues from the trailer, this story of survival and resolute is counting on tugging on your heart-strings, hard! Also Mira Sorvino is playing Josh Hartnett‘s mother? What the eff?!

Leatherface

Directed by: Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury
With: Finn Jones, Stephen Dorff, and Lili Taylor
What is it about? A teenage Leatherface escapes from a mental hospital with three other inmates, kidnapping a young nurse and taking her on a road trip from hell, while being pursued by a lawman out for revenge.
Heads Up: This looks promising, especially if you are a fan of the original 70’s classic and its mythology. For me, it is not a must see, but I am curious nonetheless.

Amityville: The Awakening

Directed by: Franck Khalfoun
With:  Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bella Thorne, Cameron Monaghan, and Kurtwood Smith
What is it about? A single mother moves her three children into a haunted house, unaware of its bloody history.
Heads Up: The trailer promises nothing interesting at all, just the same recycled jump scares. Avoid!

Renegades

Directed by: Steven Quale
With: Sullivan Stapleton, Charlie Bewley, Clemans Schick, Joshua Henry, Diarmaid Murtagh, and J.K. Simmons
What is it about? A team of Navy Seals discovers an underwater treasure in a Bosnian lake.
Heads Up: Luc Besson wrote and produced this action thriller which bares similarities to 3 Kings but unlikely to be half as good. I say don’t bother.
