Although there aren’t as many films releasing this weekend, there are enough to keep you busy, what with two war films, a horror, and a Bollywood sequel. So let’s check them out.
Hacksaw Ridge
Directed by: Mel Gibson
With: Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Teresa Palmer, and Vince Vaughn
What is it about? WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first Conscientious Objector in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
Heads Up: This is Mel Gibson‘s return to direction after 10 years (Apocalypto released in 2006!). The movie is very well received by critics, and it is also doing decent business at the US box-office. It is also well positioned for awards consideration especially for the lead actor Andrew Garfield. I would say, put it on the top of your list this weekend.
Shut In
Directed by: Farren Blackburn
With: Naomi Watts, Charlie Heaton, and Jacob Tremblay
What is it about? A heart-pounding thriller about a widowed child psychologist who lives in an isolated existence in rural New England. Caught in a deadly winter storm, she must find a way to rescue a young boy before he disappears forever.
Heads Up: This horror thriller starring Naomi Watts doesn’t look all that appealing to be frank. Even the trailer triggers more sniggers than gasps. I would say pass.
Operation Chromite
Directed by: John H. Lee
With: Jung-jae Lee, and Beom-su Lee, and Liam Neeson
What is it about? A squad of soldiers fight in the Korean War’s crucial Battle of Incheon.
Heads Up: This Korean War film was received with mixed to negative reception, touting it’s wooden dialogue, dull script, and lack of thrill. There is a superior war film releasing this weekend, so I am gonna say pass on this one too.
Rock On 2
Directed by: Shujaat Saudagar
With: Farhan Akhtar, Shraddha Kapoor, and Arjun Rampal
What is it about? The band, Magik reunites with some new members.
Heads Up: The sequel to the smash hit 2008’s Rock On! hopes to cash in the goodwill and the fanbase that the first film accumulated. While most of the original cast returns, Abhishek Kapoor is not directing this time. He has written it though, which warrants a curious look. I’m intrigued enough to want to watch it.
