The first weekend of June has one huge tentpole release. No other movie wants to take on dinosaurs, save a few smaller films dusted from the distributors’ shelves. Keep reading to know more.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Directed by: J.A. Bayona
With: Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, and Jeff Goldblum
What is it about? When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.
Heads Up: Jurassic World came out 3 years ago and squashed the competition despite getting only middling reviews. The franchise now has a better director and a trailer that played up the nostalgia for the beloved 1993 film that started it all. Jeff Goldblum is back for this one, so even though I am aware of their trick to get my attention, this is like catnip for me, so this is my one and only choice for the weekend. Our critic Lloyd Bayer has watched it. In his 3-star review, he states that the movie “lacks the heft to stand out in the franchise but has enough bite for a monster movie“.
Last Rampage
Directed by: Dwight H. Little
With: Robert Patrick, Heather Graham, and Bruce Davison
What is it about? The true story of the infamous prison break, of Gary Tison and Randy Greenwalt, from the Arizona State prison in Florence, AZ, in the summer of 1978.
Heads Up: This crime drama based on a true story has a good cast of seasoned actors. You don’t need to see it on big screen, but you might want to catch up with it on home viewing.
Abattoir
Directed by: Darren Lynn Bousman
With: Jessica Lowndes, Joe Anderson, and Lin Shaye
What is it about? An investigative reporter teams up with a police officer to solve the mystery of why a seemingly good man murdered her sister’s family.
Heads Up: This haunted house movie met with terrible reviews, and it doesn’t look the least intriguing. I say pass.
