August is here and the heat is on! You can’t escape it outside, and on screen as well. One of the most anticipated summer release, Suicide Squad, is here. That and other big releases across genres, so keep reading
Suicide Squad
Directed by: David Ayer
With: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and Jared Leto
What is it about? A secret government agency recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions in exchange for clemency.
Heads Up: Boy, did I have hopes ever since we got the kick-ass trailer and footage from Suicide Squad. Unfortunately, early reviews show that critics aren’t impressed. Complaints range from its thinly written characters, muddled plot, to it’s choppy direction. I still wanna watch it, especially since David Ayer has a decent track record and the promise of colourful crazy characters is intriguing. And then, there’s Harley Quinn!
Bad Moms
Directed by: Jon Lucas, Scott Moore
With: Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn
What is it about? When three overworked and under-appreciated moms are pushed beyond their limits, they ditch their conventional responsibilities for a jolt of long overdue freedom, fun, and comedic self-indulgence.
Heads Up: This follows the formula of The Hangover as it comes from the same writers. While the trailer was lackluster, the reviews are decent and the cast is great. Our own Lloyd Bayer gave it a 3/5 rating, and in his review he wrote: “Sure, this is one wild film for a girl’s night out but not one to be underestimated by the discerning male audience. There’s plenty to keep everyone knee-slapped yet it never gets overly gross.”
Ice Age: Collision Course
Directed by: Mike Thurmeier, Galen T. Chu
With: Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, and Queen Latifah
What is it about? Manny, Diego, and Sid join up with Buck to fend off a meteor strike that would destroy the world.
Heads Up: In its 5th installment, this franchised has become an epitome of the law of diminishing return, where each sequel has become worse than the one before it. So unless your kids drag you to it kicking and screaming, I’d recommend to stay clear.
