This weekend, most of the new releases are targeted at the ladies, which is doesn’t happen too often. Keep reading to know more.
Tully
Directed by: Jason Reitman
With: Charlize Theron, Mackenzie Davis, and Mark Duplass
What is it about? Marlo, a mother of three including a newborn, is gifted a night nanny by her brother. Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully.
Heads Up: The third collaboration between writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman after Juno and Young Adults is wooing critics, with even talks of Oscars already for its star Charlize Theron (who was the star of Young Adults as well). My only reservation would be the fear of censorship, but otherwise, I am very much looking forward to seeing this one.
Overboard
Directed by: Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg
With: Anna Faris, Eugenio Derbez, and Eva Longoria
What is it about? A spoiled playboy from a wealthy Mexican family winds up with amnesia after falling off his yacht. A single, working-class mom convinces him that they are married
Heads Up: This a remake of the 1987 film starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel, with the roles of the sexes switched. Anna Faris is immensely watchable, and the trailer promises a broad comedy. I don’t think this will be a critical darling, but maybe it will be a decent date-night film.
I Feel Pretty
Directed by: Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein
With: Amy Schumer, Michelle Williams, Emily Ratajkowski, and Tom Hopper
What is it about? A woman struggling with insecurity wakes from a fall believing she is the most beautiful and capable woman on the planet. Her new confidence empowers her to live fearlessly, but what happens when she realizes her appearance never changed?
Heads Up: Amy Schumer’s latest comedy wasn’t well received by critics, but the premise of updating Big with a twist is intriguing to me. I think the female audience will love it, and guys won’t hate it. I’d say why not.
The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society
Directed by: Mike Newell
With: Lily James, Michiel Huisman, Matthew Goode, and Jessica Brown Findlay
What is it about?A writer forms an unexpected bond with the residents of Guernsey Island in the aftermath of World War II, when she decides to write a book about their experiences during the war.
Heads Up: From director Mike Newell (Four Wedding and a Funeral, Pushing Tin, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) comes this romance drama based on a bestselling novel. The cast is wonderful, and the reviews are good. So it’s worth your consideration.
102 Not Out
Directed by: Umesh Shukla
With: Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, and Jimit Trivedi
What is it about? A 102 years old man is on a mission to break the record of the oldest man alive, with the help of his grumpy 75 years old son.
Heads Up: Two Bollywood legends are teaming up in this comedy based on a Gujarati play. It has a potential to be very entertaining. Give it a shot.
