Out This Week: 07 March 2019

There's a Marvel movie in cinemas!

March is starting with a blast with Captain Marvel. There are also a few other smaller releases if you don’t care for MCU or superheroes film.

Captain Marvel

Directed by: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
With: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Gemma Chan, and Ben Mendelsohn
What is it about? Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.
Heads Up? Captain Marvel is the first female superhero that gets her own film in MCU. The buzz is strong on this one, and the fact that it will give us the backstory of this powerful superhero who might be the one saving the day in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame is enough reason to flock to cinemas to watch it.

London Fields

Directed by: Mathew Cullen
With: Amber Heard, Theo James, Cara Delevingne, Jim Sturgess, and Billy Bob Thornton
What is it about? Clairvoyant femme fatale Nicola Six has been living with a dark premonition of her impending death by murder. She begins a tangled love affair with three uniquely different men: one of whom she knows will be her murderer.
Heads Up? After years of lingering in limbo, this crime wanna-be noir was released last year in the USA to dismal results critically (sitting at a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes) and commercially (has earned $0.5M worldwide on a budget of $8M). The rubber-neck in me wants to see how big of a trainwreck this is, but even so I’ll watch it at the comfort of my home.
NOTE: the movie will be heavily censored in this region.

Look Away

Directed by: Assaf Bernstein
With: India Eisley, Jason Isaacs, and Mira Sorvino
What is it about? The story of Maria, an alienated high-school student whose life is turned upside down when she switches places with her sinister mirror image.
Heads Up? I like the premise of this teen horror film, which has some resemblance to Carrie, but the critical consensus is that the execution fails this film. I’d say pass.

Badla

Directed by: Sujoy Ghosh
With: Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Pannu, Amrita Singh, Antonio Aakeel, and Tony Luke
What is it about? A young dynamic entrepreneur finds herself in a locked hotel room next to the body of her dead lover. She hires a prestigious lawyer to defend her, and over the course of one evening, they work together to find out what actually happened.
Heads Up? Sujoy Ghosh wrote and directed Kahaani and Kahaani 2, and based on that I will give him the benefit of the doubt over the generic and tired premise delivered in the trailer. That and the fact it’s starring an Indian legend and a very promising young starlet should be reason enough to give this your time.
